Choosing Your First Horse

First horses play a valuable part in your life as a blooming horse rider. So choosing the right horse is very important, first horses teaches you the ropes and tricks to being able to get on any horse and go for a lovely ride on a beach, or down a rode, or even at a cometition. But finding the right horse can be a confusing, long, and even dangerous feat, so I have created a guide to help all those first time horse seekers out there.

The Temperment of Your First Horse

Your first horse should be able to stay calm under most situations. Although a horses natural instinct is to flee so he/she may get spooked about certain thing e.g fire works. He/She must be patient, as when you are learning to ride you may do something wrong and an impatient horse may react badly to a wrong signal.

The Confirmation and Color

The confirmation and color of your first horse does not matter when choosing him/her the only requirement your first horse MUST have is a good temperment.

Gender of Your First Horse

The horses gender only has a small part to play when choosing your first horse.

A mare when in season can get a little frisky and pushy at times and may need a more experienced person to handle and/or ride her. When giving a signal to a mare she tends to needed to be asked not pushed to get a better result.

A gelding is more docile as he has no hormones and can be pushed around more.

A stallion is not recommended as a first horse as can be violent if not handled correctly so only very experience person should handle/have a stallion.

Note: When choosing your first horse bring an experienced horseman/woman with you for a second opinion as he/she will know what to look for.

Welcome to HubPages. This caught my attention because one of my children is an avid horse rider and has been in love with horses since she was 9 and still is and having owned at least two horses in the past I saw how she connected with them to the point of seemingly being able to "speak" to them

Thank you for the welcome.Glad the article caught your attention. It is a wonderful thing, the bond and connection that human and horse can have especially if it comes to the point of being able to 'speak' to them.
